Fulldome Festival Jena 2014

On May 22-24, 2014 Jena planetarium hosted the annual FullDome Festival, and it was the first time when Fulldome Film Society represented its work at this event.

Jena planetarium is one of the oldest in the world, and the town is also famous for its Carl Zeiss factory producing classical optical mechanical projectors. Zeiss Planetarium Jena and Carl Zeiss AG company organise the festival which is supported by all leading world producers of planetarium equipment.

The festival showcases fulldome films in different categories delivered by professionals and students. For many students of arts faculties it is an opportunity to demonstrate their degree works.

This year Fulldome Film SOciety took part in the festival competition together with our partner, FulldomeLab studio. Our shows “Constellations” and “Gopal. Prince of the Cows’ Planet” had been selected to participate in the main block of the program featuring full-length films. It was the first time when Russian studios showcased their films at Jena Festival.

“Constellations” is the first program for digital planetariums created in Russia in 4K super high resolution. In order to make true celestial environment visualization we created a three-dimension space structure based on scientific data, with over 130 thousand stars located precisely in their places. We also modeled dozens of unique space objects, such as double- and triple-star systems, red giants, nebulas, star clusters, and galaxies.

“Gopal. Prince of the Cows’ Planet” is a fascinating fulldome cartoon based on the ancient Indian story of the Govardhan hill. The cartoon is created with talented graphics and animation which would touch anyone’s feelings.

Both films have been demonstrated at the festival in the English language. The president of Fulldome Film Society, George Aistov, was glad to present them personally at the planetarium.

Many years of Fulldome Film Society’s purposeful and planned work on development of the fulldome content, software and equipment industry has brought its fruit – creative teams in Russia are starting to produce their first professional fulldome works and demonstrate them at international festivals.
